Best Schools in Des Moines, Iowa — A Buyer's Guide for 2026

If you're eyeing a move to Des Moines, schools are probably near the top of your list — and I get it. I'm a Central Iowa REALTOR® who works this market every day, and I've walked plenty of families through the Des Moines school picture from every angle: buyers set on a specific elementary feeder, folks relocating from out of state, and parents weighing the city against the districts next door. So here's my honest, plain-English read on the schools here.

Des Moines Public Schools at a Glance

Most of the city is served by Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) — officially the Des Moines Independent Community School District, and the largest public school district in Iowa. DMPS was also the first district in the state to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. What stands out to me is the sheer breadth of programs a large urban district can offer — IB, magnet options, career academies, and a wide range of activities. When you want the hard numbers — test scores and accountability metrics — the Iowa Department of Education's School Performance Profiles tool is the objective place to look.

Des Moines' High Schools

DMPS operates five comprehensive high schools across the city:

East High School — the historic east-side school, the oldest in the district, with deep community roots.

Hoover High School — on the northwest side, serving the Beaverdale and surrounding neighborhoods.

Lincoln High School — the large south-side school, drawing from the south of the city.

North High School — serving the north side and Highland Park area.

Roosevelt High School — on the near west side near South of Grand, known for its arts and IB offerings.

Middle Schools in Des Moines

DMPS runs several middle schools feeding those high schools — including Brody, Callanan, Goodrell, Harding, Hiatt, Hoyt, McCombs, Meredith, and Weeks. Which middle school a home feeds into depends on its exact address.

Elementary Schools — Feeder Patterns Matter

Here's something a lot of buyers miss: which elementary your child attends helps set the middle and high school they'll feed into. So before you fall for a house, let's confirm the attendance zone for that exact address — a large district like DMPS adjusts boundaries over time, and I'd rather you know up front than be surprised later.

DMPS operates dozens of elementary schools across the city's neighborhoods, from Beaverdale and the Drake area to the south and east sides. The right one for you depends entirely on where you buy.

The Districts on the Edges of the City

This is the single most important thing to understand about Des Moines schools: the city touches several districts along its borders. A home with a Des Moines mailing address may actually be zoned to Southeast Polk, Johnston, West Des Moines Community, Saydel, or Carlisle depending on which edge of the city it sits on. Attendance boundaries do not follow city limits. Never assume the district from the address — we confirm it for the specific property.

Real Estate Tips for Des Moines School-Zone Buyers

  1. Verify the district AND the attendance zone before you offer. In a city this size, the district itself can change block to block on the edges.
  2. Consider magnet and IB options. DMPS offers programs that aren't tied strictly to your neighborhood school — worth exploring if a specific program matters to you.
  3. Match the neighborhood to the school picture you want. Different neighborhoods feed different schools; I can map that against your budget and priorities.
  4. Have financing ready. Move-in-ready homes in popular neighborhoods still draw quick offers — get pre-approved so you can move when the right one appears.
