Best Schools in West Des Moines, Iowa — A Buyer's Guide for 2026

If you're eyeing a move to West Des Moines, schools are probably near the top of your list — and here the answer starts with one question most buyers don't think to ask: which county is the house in? West Des Moines spans Polk and Dallas counties, and that line decides which district your kids attend. I'm a Central Iowa REALTOR® who works this market every day, and I've walked plenty of families through it. Here's my honest, plain-English read.

Two Districts, One City — Start Here

West Des Moines is served by two public school districts depending on the address:

Because the boundary runs through the city, two homes a few blocks apart can feed different districts entirely. That's the single biggest thing to verify before you fall for a house. For objective outcomes, the Iowa Department of Education's School Performance Profiles tool is the place to look.

West Des Moines Community School District (Polk Side)

The West Des Moines Community School District operates eight elementary schools, two junior high schools, and one comprehensive high school, plus a freshman-only campus and an alternative high school. What stands out to me is the depth of programming and the community's long track record of showing up for its schools.

High Schools

Valley High School — The district's flagship, one of the larger high schools in the metro, with a broad AP course catalog, strong arts and athletics, and long-standing traditions.

Valley Southwoods Freshman High School — A dedicated ninth-grade campus that eases the transition into Valley.

Walnut Creek Campus — The district's alternative high school.

Junior Highs & Elementaries

Two junior high schools (Indian Hills and Stilwell) feed Valley, with eight elementary schools spread across the Polk County side. Parts of Clive, Urbandale, and Windsor Heights also fall inside WDMCS boundaries — another reason to confirm the exact address.

Waukee Community School District (Dallas Side)

Homes in the Dallas County portion of West Des Moines — generally the newer Jordan Creek and West Glen area — are served by the Waukee Community School District, one of the fastest-growing districts in the state. Several of its elementaries are physically located in West Des Moines, and the district has expanded to multiple high school campuses to keep up with growth.

Private Schools

Dowling Catholic High School, one of the metro's largest private high schools, is located in West Des Moines and draws students from across the region.

Real Estate Tips for West Des Moines School-Zone Buyers

  1. Confirm the county first, then the attendance zone. Polk means West Des Moines Community; Dallas means Waukee. Never assume from the city name alone.
  2. Premium school zones command premium pricing. Be prepared to compete for homes in the most sought-after feeders on either side of the line.
  3. Newer construction skews Dallas County (Waukee). The west-end Jordan Creek/West Glen growth is largely in the Waukee district — great if that's your target, worth knowing if it isn't.
  4. Get pre-approved and ready. Well-priced homes in top zones still move quickly. Have your financing and offer strategy set before you tour.
