Altoona grew from 19,565 people at the 2020 Census to 22,796 in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate, and Meta's data center campus is in town. Adventureland + Prairie Meadows + new retail and restaurants make it a destination for the whole metro, not just Altoona residents. If you're considering a move to Altoona, here's the honest assessment from someone who works this market daily.
You'll love Altoona if you...
The Southeast Polk Community School District serves 7,501 students (2024-25, NCES Common Core of Data).
For specific school-level performance metrics, the Iowa Department of Education's School Performance Profiles tool is the most current objective source. I also keep a separate deep-dive on Altoona schools if you want every detail.
Altoona has several distinct sub-markets, each with its own character: Berwick area, downtown Altoona, north growth corridor, Vandalia Lake area. Each has different pricing, character, and target buyer. For specific neighborhood guidance, I work through this individually during the buyer consultation. For prices and the neighborhoods to know, see my buyer's guide to homes for sale in Altoona.
15 minutes to downtown Des Moines on US-65/Hubbell Ave.
Altoona's best-known attractions sit within city limits. Adventureland opened in 1974, after a tornado pushed its planned July debut to late August. Prairie Meadows, owned by Polk County, ran its first horse race on March 1, 1989, and added its casino in 1995. The open-air Outlets of Des Moines sits on Bass Pro Drive near the I-80 and U.S. 65 interchange.
Day to day, Olde Town centers on 1st Avenue and 2nd Street, home to the Altoona Area Historical Society museum and the city's Christmas in Olde Town tradition. The paved Gay Lea Wilson Trail has an Altoona access point at 8th Street SW and 7th Avenue SW and links to Pleasant Hill, Des Moines and Ankeny. It's worth walking Olde Town and stopping by the historical society museum before settling on a neighborhood.
Prices move month to month, so I keep a dated market snapshot on the Altoona area page and pull live MLS comps for any home you are serious about. Days on market vary by price point and neighborhood; I pull the current figure for your price range before we write an offer. To set that price range first, my framework for how much house you can afford in Altoona covers income, debt, and the Iowa property-tax factor.
For a current snapshot of Altoona inventory + pricing, I send a free monthly Central Iowa market report. Subscribe at Jackson's Hub.
Whether you're a first-time buyer, a move-up family, or a relocation buyer evaluating Altoona for the first time, I can walk through what your specific budget gets you here vs. competing communities. No pressure, no sales pitch - just the numbers and the honest reality of the market.
