What Ankeny Is Known For

Ankeny's story starts in Uptown, which Travel Iowa calls "the neighborhood where Ankeny was born." John Fletcher Ankeny and his wife, Sarah, recorded the town plat in 1875, and today the Uptown Ankeny Farmers Market sets up Saturday mornings from late May through September at 715 W 1st Street. The High Trestle Trail begins in Ankeny and runs 25 miles to Woodward, crossing the Des Moines River between Madrid and Woodward on a half-mile, 13-story trail bridge.

The District at Prairie Trail, just off SW State Street at SW Vintage Parkway, is the dining and entertainment center of the 1,031-acre Prairie Trail community. Des Moines Area Community College has had its main campus in Ankeny since 1968. To feel the difference between the older and newer parts of town, spend a Saturday morning at the Uptown market and an evening at The District.

Prices move month to month, so I keep a dated market snapshot on the Ankeny area page and pull live MLS comps for any home you are serious about. Days on market vary by price point and neighborhood; I pull the current figure for your price range before we write an offer. To set that price range in the first place, my framework for how much house you can afford in Ankeny covers income, debt, and the Iowa property-tax factor.

Things to Consider Before Moving to Ankeny

  1. School attendance zones change. Verify zoning for any specific address before committing.
  2. Commute reality matters. 15 minutes to downtown Des Moines on I-35. 35 minutes to Ames and Iowa State. - pressure-test your daily reality, not the rush-hour fantasy.
  3. Property taxes vary by exact location. Your actual property tax bill comes from the assessed value, the homestead exemption and the consolidated levy for the exact address - the county treasurer publishes it for every parcel.
  4. HOAs and covenants vary by subdivision. Some Ankeny neighborhoods have strong HOAs; others have none. Make sure the rules align with how you actually want to live.
