Carlisle was laid out in 1851 between the North and Middle Rivers, near where they meet the Des Moines River, and today spans Warren and Polk counties. Its best-known amenity is the Summerset Trail, an 11-mile paved route that follows an abandoned rail line from Carlisle to Indianola. At the trail's midpoint, Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park, a former coal mine site that became a state park in 2004, offers two fishing lakes and a paved bike loop.
In town, the 47-acre Scotch Ridge Nature Park is restored native habitat and the trailhead for the 3.3-mile Scotch Ridge Nature Trail, which links to the Summerset Trail near the Aquatic Center. Before you tour homes, walk Scotch Ridge and ride the trail's north end.
