Polk City sits along Saylorville Lake, the Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Des Moines River, completed in 1977 and covering 5,520 surface acres at normal pool. Big Creek State Park, at 8794 NW 125th Avenue, wraps around Big Creek Lake, and the Iowa DNR says the park has the largest beach in the state park system. From that beach, the paved Neal Smith Trail runs through the Saylorville Lake area to Des Moines.
In town, Polk City keeps what Catch Des Moines calls "the last remaining Square in Polk County," a city park with a bandstand. The Big Creek Schoolhouse at 112 3rd Street, built in 1863 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, still serves as city hall. Plan a visit during the Four Seasons Festival in late June, and walk the square and the lakeshore the same day.
Prices move month to month, so I keep a dated market snapshot on the Polk City area page and pull live MLS comps for any home you are serious about. Days on market vary by price point and neighborhood; I pull the current figure for your price range before we write an offer. Before you look at comps, my framework for how much house you can afford in Polk City covers income, debt, and the property-tax factor.
