Huxley is the sweet spot between Ames and Des Moines - close enough to both for a workable commute, far enough to feel genuinely small-town. If you're considering a move to Huxley, here's the honest assessment from someone who works this market daily. My longer piece on why buyers keep discovering Huxley covers the room to grow and the easy commute to Ames and Des Moines.
You'll love Huxley if you...
The Ballard Community School District serves 1,966 students (2024-25, NCES Common Core of Data).
For specific school-level performance metrics, the Iowa Department of Education's School Performance Profiles tool is the most current objective source. I also keep a separate deep-dive on Huxley schools if you want every detail.
Huxley has several distinct sub-markets, each with its own character: Westbrook, Eastview, central Huxley, Slater-adjacent. Each has different pricing, character, and target buyer. For specific neighborhood guidance, I work through this individually during the buyer consultation.
15 minutes to Ames. 25 minutes to downtown Des Moines.
Huxley was platted in 1881 by S.S. Merrill, who named it for the British biologist Thomas Henry Huxley. The town sits on the Heart of Iowa Nature Trail, a paved route on the former Milwaukee Railroad corridor. Its trailhead is at Railroad Park, and heading west the trail meets the High Trestle Trail in Slater; heading east it passes through a monarch-themed tunnel under I-35 on the way to Cambridge.
The city maintains seven parks on more than 100 acres, including a disc golf course at Centennial Park. The three-day Huxley Prairie Festival, held in late August, brings the city, fire and rescue, churches and local groups together. A ride from Railroad Park shows quickly how the trail ties Huxley to its neighbors.
Prices move month to month, so I keep a dated market snapshot on the Huxley area page and pull live MLS comps for any home you are serious about. Days on market vary by price point and neighborhood; I pull the current figure for your price range before we write an offer. For the current buyer's read, my guide to homes for sale in Huxley covers small-town prices, the Ballard district, and the dual commute appeal.

Whether you're a first-time buyer, a move-up family, or a relocation buyer evaluating Huxley for the first time, I can walk through what your specific budget gets you here vs. competing communities. No pressure, no sales pitch - just the numbers and the honest reality of the market.
