Bottom line: Boone is one district, four buildings, and a layout that catches buyers off guard. Elementary here is split by grade band, not by neighborhood attendance area. Ledges Elementary takes PK-1 and Franklin Elementary takes 2-4, which means that inside the city, elementary assignment follows the student's grade rather than the address. Boone Middle School runs 5-8 and Boone High School runs 9-12. Understand that structure and you have understood most of what a Boone address tells you about schools.
Boone is the county seat of Boone County, a city of 12,471 people (US Census Bureau QuickFacts, July 1 2025 estimate) about 17 miles west of Ames on US Route 30. The City of Boone describes itself as 42 miles north of Des Moines. The whole city is served by one district: the Boone Community School District, which enrolled 1,978 students PK-12 in 2024-25.

One district and one high school means there is no boundary puzzle between competing high schools inside the city, and no question about which district a Boone city address belongs to. The questions that do come up are about which building, in which year, and that is a grade question here more than an address question.
Most Central Iowa districts run neighborhood elementaries: several K-5 buildings, each with its own attendance boundary, feeding a shared middle and high school. Boone does not work that way. It runs narrow grade bands across the whole city, so a student moves through Ledges, then Franklin, then the middle school, then the high school, on the same path as every other student in town.
Two consequences worth knowing before you shop:
The Ledges consolidation is the thing to know. Ledges Elementary opened in fall 2023, consolidating students from the former Lincoln and Page elementary buildings into a single PK-1 site. That is recent enough that plenty of the internet has not caught up. Older listings, older school-zone maps, older school-search sites and older neighborhood write-ups still name Lincoln or Page. If you are reading a school reference for a Boone property and it mentions either building, you are reading something written before fall 2023, and I recommend treating everything else on that page as equally out of date.
Boone Middle School's 5-8 grade span is confirmed by two independent sources, which is worth saying out loud because middle-versus-junior-high spans get miscopied constantly across listing sites.
Beyond K-12, the DMACC Boone Campus sits inside the city on a 23-acre site it has occupied since September 1968; the campus has been part of DMACC since July 1, 1969. That is a post-secondary option in town rather than part of the school district, and buyers routinely conflate the two.
Every public school building in Boone, with the grade span each one serves and its 2024-25 enrollment. Building assignment is set by the district, not by a listing sheet or a map on a real estate portal - verify the assignment for the exact property before you write an offer.

This is a structure question, not a ranking question, and I am not going to hand you a verdict on a district your student has not attended. What I can do is lay out the mechanical differences so you can decide which structure suits your situation.
What a single-district city like Boone gives you: one district for the whole city, one high school, and no risk that a boundary redraw moves your address into a different high school attendance area. The school calendar and the community calendar overlap heavily.
What a larger metro district gives you: a wider course catalog, more specialized programs, and more sections of any given class. Larger districts also redraw boundaries as they grow, which is a live consideration in the fast-growing metro suburbs and much less of one in Boone.
The grade-band trade-off is specific to Boone: narrow bands mean more building transitions and, for a household with children in different bands, two drop-offs instead of one. Some buyers find that irrelevant; others plan their commute around it. Drive it on a weekday morning before you decide it does not matter.
I am not the authority on attendance boundaries, and neither is any listing site. Go to the primary sources and verify for yourself:
Say it plainly: attendance boundaries change, grade bands change, and buildings open and close - Boone's own layout changed in 2023. A school named in a listing is not a guarantee, and nothing on this page is a guarantee either. Confirm the current assignment with the Boone Community School District for your exact address before you write an offer. I deliberately publish no graduation rate, proficiency percentage, test score or ranking on this page, because the versions circulating secondhand are not verified and I will not put a number on a page I cannot stand behind.
Boone is served by the Boone Community School District, a PK-12 district that enrolled 1,978 students in 2024-25 (NCES Common Core of Data) across four buildings: Ledges Elementary PK-1, Franklin Elementary 2-4, Boone Middle School 5-8, and Boone High School 9-12.
Four public school buildings: Boone High School (grades 9-12, 704 students), Boone Middle School (grades 5-8, 586 students), Ledges Elementary School (grades PK-1, 336 students) and Franklin Elementary School (grades 2-4, 329 students). Enrollment is from the NCES Common Core of Data for 2024-25.
By grade band rather than by neighborhood attendance area, which is unusual in Central Iowa. Ledges Elementary serves PK-1 and Franklin Elementary serves 2-4, so inside the city the building follows the student's grade, not the address. Confirm current assignment with the district for a specific address.
Ledges Elementary School opened in fall 2023 and consolidated students from the former Lincoln and Page elementary buildings. Older listings, older school-zone maps and older third-party pages still reference Lincoln or Page, and that is the single most common piece of outdated information about this district.
No. A school named in a listing is entered by a person filling out a form and can be out of date or simply wrong. The district is the only authority. Call the Boone Community School District with the exact address before you write an offer.

Buyers looking at Boone usually have one or two other Central Iowa towns on the list. Each of these is the same guide for that city, built the same way:
If you are weighing Boone against Ames, Madrid or a metro suburb, I am happy to lay the structures side by side and tell you what each one means for your search - no pressure and no sales pitch. A 15-minute conversation usually settles more than an afternoon of reading school-rating sites:
Nothing on this page is lending, tax, or legal advice, and nothing here is a determination of school assignment. Take financing questions to a licensed lender, tax questions to a CPA, contract questions to an Iowa real estate attorney, and school questions to the Boone Community School District.
